How does Rakuten work? Formally known as eBates I never thought I would recommend Rakuten as something where you can make money. Seriously, I thought it was too good to be true. But after seeing friends earn money from shopping from their favorite shops online I was convinced. So I gave it a try and received my first check.

Rakuten is a company that allows you earn cash back when you shop online or in stores. By downloading the app on your phone or simply signing up you get a $10 cash back ( at the time of this post). Sometimes they have higher cashbacks. For example, as re-writing this it’s $40 cash back for both parties. You just never know.

There are several ways to earn cashback. Here are some ways straight from Rakuten.

According to Rakuten, their app which is a “ 4-star Rakuten App ensures you’re always connected to savings.
To get started, visit your app store to find the Rakuten App and download it onto your mobile device. Once you’ve downloaded the app, you can activate a Rakuten Shopping Trip by clicking a Rakuten link.
When you’ve started a Shopping Trip, a window will open within the Rakuten App that lets you know that Cash Back has been activated. That window will then direct you to the store’s site to start shopping. If for any reason that store does not offer Cash Back through the mobile app, you will be notified in the activation window.”
The Rakuten Cash Back Button
Their “Cash Back Button is an automated tool that proactively finds discounts and lets you earn Cash Back—without visiting Rakuten first.
To get started, first visit your browser store, search for the Rakuten Cash Back Button and download it. Once you’ve downloaded the Cash Back Button, you’ll see it in your browser bar.
Then, when you visit a store’s site, you’ll get a drop-down notification of the Cash Back and coupons offered at that store. Simply click on that drop down to start earning Cash Back, without interrupting your shopping.
You can also activate Cash Back through the Cash Back Button icon that appears on your browser bar by clicking on store cards, coupons and more. In both cases, you will be notified that Cash Back has been activated.
If for any reason, the store does not offer Cash Back through the Cash Back Button, the notification will not appear.”

How much can I make on Rakuten?
The amount of money you make is all up to you. Below is a screenshot of my latest balance which includes a lot of travel cashback. Travel apps and Amazon is the places where I shop the most but more often than not I forget to use the Rakuten app. One tip I would suggest is to have the Rakuten app on your phone home screen for easy access. Also, anytime you need to book a flight or hotel remember to use Rakuten as these will be higher cashback amounts.
Some things to remember when using Rakuten:
Don’t forget to use it when you book your vacations. Hotels, airfares, and extra getaways are all included in Rakuten when using travel websites like Orbitz, Expedia, Bookings and many more.
When booking travel hotel and airfare, you will have to wait several weeks if not a couple of months after your reservations to earn and get the cashback. It’s still worth it.
